Ingredients

4 large slices of thick bread (preferably brioche or challah)

2 large eggs

1 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 tablespoon butter (for cooking)

2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for apple mixture)

Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream (for serving)

Caramel sauce (for drizzling, optional)

Chopped pecans or walnuts (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

Prep the Apples: In a medium bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Set aside to marinate for about 10 minutes.

Make the French Toast Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar until fully combined.

Soak the Bread: Place the slices of bread into the egg mixture, allowing them to soak for about 2-3 minutes on each side until fully coated.

Cook the Apples: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the marinated apples and sauté for about 5-7 minutes or until they start to caramelize and become tender. Remove the apples and set aside.

Cook the French Toast: In the same skillet, add the soaked bread slices. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. You may need to do this in batches, depending on your skillet size.

Assemble the Skillet: Once the French toast is cooked, place the slices back into the skillet. Top with the sautéed apples, making sure to share them evenly over the French toast.

Serve: Remove from heat and serve warm, drizzled with caramel sauce (if using) and topped with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Sprinkle with chopped pecans or walnuts for added crunch if desired.

Enjoy: Dive into this delicious warm apple pie French toast with your favorite breakfast beverage!
