Ingredients

For the apple filling:

4 medium-sized apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

For the crisp topping:

1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup chopped nuts (such as walnuts or pecans, optional)

Pinch of salt

To serve:

Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Apples: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Toss well until the apples are evenly coated. Transfer the apple mixture to a greased 9x9 inch baking dish.

Make the Crisp Topping: In another bowl, mix together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the softened butter and mix with your hands or a fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. If using nuts, fold them into the mixture.

Assemble the Dish: Spread the crisp topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish, ensuring all the apples are covered.

Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown and crispy.

Cool Slightly: Remove the apple crisp from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. This will allow the juices to thicken slightly.

Serve: Distribute the warm apple crisp into bowls and top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream if desired. Enjoy your delightful dessert!
