Ingredients

4 cups fresh apples, peeled and sliced (about 5-6 medium apples)

1 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 box (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix

1 cup unsalted butter, melted (2 sticks)

1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

Ice cream or whipped cream for serving (optional)

Instructions

Prep the Apples: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). Toss the mixture until the apples are well coated.

Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or a light layer of butter.

Layer the Apples: Evenly spread the apple mixture on the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

Add the Cake Mix: Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the apples. Do not stir; just allow it to cover the apples in an even layer.

Add Butter: Pour the melted butter over the cake mix, ensuring it covers the entire surface. This will create a delicious, crusty topping as it bakes.

Optional Nuts: If using, sprinkle the chopped walnuts or pecans on top of the melted butter for added crunch and flavor.

Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.

Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream if desired.
