12 oz spaghetti

2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed

1/2 cup pine nuts (lightly toasted)

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

2 cloves garlic, peeled

Zest of 1 lemon

Juice of 1 lemon

Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional garnish: cherry tomatoes, halved; additional Parmesan cheese; fresh basil leaves

Instructions
 

Cook the Spaghetti:

    - In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water and then drain the spaghetti.

      Prepare the Pesto:

        - In a food processor, combine the fresh basil leaves, toasted pine nuts, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Pulse until the mixture becomes a coarse paste.

          Incorporate Olive Oil:

            - With the food processor running, slowly drizzle in the olive oil until the pesto reaches a smooth and creamy consistency. If the pesto is too thick, you can add a little reserved pasta water to reach your desired thickness. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

              Combine Spaghetti and Pesto:
