The choice between ground beef and turkey can greatly influence the flavor and nutritional profile of your Sloppy Joes. Ground beef, with its rich flavor and juicy texture, is the traditional choice and offers a satisfying bite that many have come to love. It's also a great source of protein, iron, and essential vitamins. However, if you're looking for a lighter option, ground turkey is an excellent alternative. It has a milder flavor, which allows the other ingredients to shine, and it typically contains less fat and fewer calories than its beef counterpart. Regardless of your choice, both options provide a hearty base for the savory sauce that defines this dish.

Ingredients

1 lb (450g) ground beef (or turkey for a lighter option)

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1 green bell pepper, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup (240ml) ketchup

2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp brown sugar

1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)

1 tsp chili powder (optional for a kick)

Salt and pepper to taste

4 hamburger buns

Olive oil for sautéing

Pickles and coleslaw for serving (optional)

Instructions

Sauté the Vegetables: In a large skillet, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and diced green bell pepper. Sauté until they are softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Brown the Meat: Push the vegetables to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef (or turkey). Cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until it's browned and no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Combine Ingredients: Stir the sautéed vegetables into the cooked meat. Add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix well until everything is evenly combined.

Simmer: Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld together.

Toast the Buns (Optional): While the mixture simmers, you can toast the hamburger buns on a pan or in a toaster for added crunch.

Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Spoon the savory meat mixture onto the bottom half of each bun. Top with pickles and coleslaw if desired, then cap with the top half of the bun.

Serve: Plate your Sloppy Joes with some potato chips or fries on the side for a complete meal. Enjoy this hearty, flavorful dish!
