At its core, pulled pork is a dish that celebrates the rich traditions of American barbecue. Originating from the Southern states, pulled pork is made by slow-cooking pork until it becomes tender enough to be easily shredded with a fork. The result is a succulent meat that can be enjoyed in various forms, from sandwiches to tacos, or even served on its own with sides. The key to achieving that melt-in-your-mouth texture lies in selecting the right cut of meat and employing the appropriate cooking methods.

Ingredients

For the Pulled Pork:

3-4 lbs pork shoulder (also known as pork butt)

1 tablespoon smoked paprika

1 tablespoon garlic powder

1 tablespoon onion powder

2 teaspoons brown sugar

2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)

1 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite brand)

1 cup chicken broth

For the Coleslaw:

4 cups green cabbage, shredded

1 cup carrots, grated

1/2 cup mayonnaise

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

For Serving:

12 slider buns

Pickles (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Pork: In a small bowl, mix smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Rub this spice mixture generously over the pork shoulder.

Cook the Pork: Place the seasoned pork shoulder in a slow cooker. Pour the BBQ sauce and chicken broth over the pork. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours, or high for 4 hours, until the pork is tender and easily shredded with a fork.

Make the Coleslaw: In a large bowl, combine shredded cabbage and grated carrots. In a separate bowl, mix mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper until smooth. Pour the dressing over the cabbage and carrots and toss to combine. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.

Shred the Pork: Once the pork is cooked, remove it from the slow cooker and place it on a cutting board. Use two forks to shred the meat into bite-sized pieces. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker to soak up the juices for about 10 minutes.

Assemble the Sliders: Slice the slider buns in half. Spoon some pulled pork onto the bottom half of each bun. Top with a generous helping of coleslaw, and add pickles if desired. Cap with the top half of the bun.

Serve: Arrange the sliders on a platter and serve warm. Enjoy along with some extra BBQ sauce on the side for drizzling!
