Ingredients

2 cups fresh figs, stems removed and chopped

1 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup whole milk

2 large eggs

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Fig Jam: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the chopped figs, granulated sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Stir well and let the mixture simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the figs are soft and the mixture thickens into a jam-like consistency. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round baking dish with the softened butter.

Make the Batter: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and eggs until well combined. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Assemble the Bake: Pour half of the batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly. Spoon the fig jam over the batter, then gently pour the remaining batter on top. Use a knife to swirl the jam slightly into the batter for a marbled effect.

Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool and Serve: Once done, remove from the oven and allow it to cool in the baking dish for about 10 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar before slicing into wedges and serving warm or at room temperature.
