Ingredients

1 block (14 oz) firm tofu, drained and pressed

1/4 cup soy sauce

1/4 cup mirin (sweet rice wine)

2 tablespoons rice vinegar

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (panko preferred for extra crunch)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon ginger powder

1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for frying)

Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Chopped green onions (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu: Cut the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes. Pat them dry with paper towels to ensure they are as moisture-free as possible, which will help with crispiness.

Make the Teriyaki Marinade: In a bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, mirin, rice vinegar, and brown sugar until well combined. Set aside a small portion (about 2 tablespoons) for glazing later.

Marinate the Tofu: Place the tofu cubes into a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them, ensuring that each piece is coated. Allow the tofu to marinate for at least 30 minutes, or longer if possible for deeper flavor.

Prepare the Breading: In a separate bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, cornstarch, garlic powder, and ginger powder.

Coat the Tofu: Remove the tofu from the marinade, allowing excess liquid to drip off. Roll each cube in the breadcrumb mixture until fully coated.

Fry the Nuggets: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the tofu nuggets in a single layer (you may need to do this in batches). Fry for about 5-6 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.

Glaze the Nuggets: Once the nuggets are fried, lower the heat and pour the reserved teriyaki sauce over the nuggets in the skillet. Toss gently to coat and let simmer for 1-2 minutes, allowing the sauce to caramelize slightly and become sticky.

Serve: Transfer the crispy tofu teriyaki nuggets to a serving platter. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish.

Enjoy your dish! These nuggets are delicious on their own, over rice, or as part of a larger meal.
